The most underrated of the four — and the only credit card currency that reaches American Airlines AAdvantage. What the points are worth, which cards transfer at full ratio, and the rules that decide whether you get approved.
Reviewed September 20, 2026 · written by Justin RasmussenCiti is the most underrated of the four big programs and the one I recommend third. Its case rests on one thing the others can't match: American Airlines AAdvantage is a transfer partner. If you fly American, or you want access to Oneworld awards priced on AAdvantage's chart, this is the only credit card currency that gets you there.

| Citi Strata Premier | Moderate | Elevated earning on air travel, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations, plus an annual hotel benefit | Full 1:1 |
| Citi Strata Elite | High | Citi's premium travel card, with a credit stack to match the fee | Full 1:1 |
| Citi Double Cash | None | 2% on everything — 1% when you buy, 1% when you pay | Reduced unless paired |

Earning rates and caps change; confirm current terms on the issuer's page before applying. "Paired" means holding a premium Citi card in the same ThankYou account — see the next section. Reviewed September 20, 2026.
This guide is about how the program works, not which card to apply for. Welcome offers change constantly, so they live in one place and one place only — kept current, with an honest note on each link about whether I earn anything from it.

Partner list verified September 20, 2026 against Upgraded Points' Citi partner tracker. Ratios shown are for premium cards — Strata Premier, Strata Elite or legacy Prestige. Minimum transfer is 1,000 points. Citi discontinued point sharing between accounts in May 2026. All transfers are one-way and irreversible.
This is the single most important structural fact about Citi, and it's the one most people discover too late. The fix is the same one that applies at Chase: hold one premium card in the account, and let the no-fee cards do the earning.
A Double Cash earning an effective 2x on everything, paired with a Strata Premier that unlocks 1:1 transfers, is a genuinely strong and inexpensive setup. A Double Cash alone is a cash-back card with extra steps.
Being able to top off an AAdvantage balance with credit card points is genuinely unique among the major currencies. If you're a few thousand miles short of an award, or you want Oneworld partner awards priced on AAdvantage's chart, Citi is the only door.
The same published award chart that makes Turkish valuable with Capital One miles, reachable here at 1:1 from a premium card. Expect to work for the booking; expect the price to be worth it.
Fast transfers, no carrier-imposed surcharges, and Star Alliance access. A reliable default when you want a business-class seat without a four-figure cash component.
Direct access to what is widely considered the best business-class product flying. Worth building toward if a long-haul trip is on your horizon.
Rotating monthly discounts of 25–50%. The easiest win in the program if you can move your dates.
Points generally remain available while your account is open and in good standing. Citi has historically applied expiration windows after an account closes, so move points out or into another ThankYou-earning account before you cancel a card.
Because transfer ratios depend on which Citi card you hold. Premium cards such as the Strata Premier and Strata Elite transfer to most airline partners at 1:1. Cards like the Double Cash and Custom Cash transfer at reduced ratios — often around 1:0.7 — unless you also hold a premium card in the same ThankYou account.
Citi will generally approve you for at most one card every eight days and two cards every 65 days, counting personal and business applications together. Citi is also unusually sensitive to recent hard inquiries, and premium cards in particular are frequently denied to applicants with several recent pulls.
Yes — American Airlines AAdvantage is a Citi transfer partner, and it is the main reason to pay attention to this program. No other major transferable currency offers a route into AAdvantage, which makes Citi the only practical way to top off an AAdvantage balance with credit card points.
For most people, yes, if you actually use the categories. It earns elevated rewards on a genuinely broad set of everyday spending — air travel, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations — which is a wider net than most cards at that fee level cast, and it transfers at full ratio.
Not usually better — different. Citi is the program most people should hold third rather than first. Its case is specific: the AAdvantage partnership, a strong set of everyday earning categories, and access to Turkish and Avianca. If those things don't matter to you, Chase or Amex will serve you better.
