everything you need to know

The easiest program to earn in and the hardest to get approved for. A flat 2x on everything, a 1-cent floor that always works, and 22 transfer partners that reach every major alliance.

What are Capital One miles worth?

Capital One miles are worth about 1.7 to 2 cents each transferred to a partner, and a flat 1 cent redeemed as a statement credit against a travel purchase. That 1-cent floor is the program's defining feature: it is simple, it always works, and it is available on any travel charge without hunting for award space. The gap between the floor and a good transfer is smaller than in the other programs — which makes Capital One the most forgiving of the four and the least rewarding at the very top end.

This is the program I recommend to people who want points without a hobby. A flat 2x on every purchase means no category tracking, and the eraser feature means you are never stuck. If you want to go deeper, the transfer list has quietly become one of the strongest around — 22 partners, including several that unlock every major alliance.

Which Capital One cards earn miles?

Five cards transfer to partners: the Venture, Venture X, VentureOne, and their two business versions. The Venture X is the one worth the most attention — it earns 2x on everything, and its annual travel credit plus anniversary miles bonus together cover most of the annual fee before you count anything else.

For a contractor or small business owner, the appeal here is simplicity. There are no bonus categories to chase, which means no spend goes to waste on a 1x card by accident. That's worth more than it sounds for anyone who doesn't want to think about which card to pull out.

What are the Capital One transfer partners?

Capital One has 22 transfer partners — 18 airlines and 4 hotel programs. Most transfer at 1:1 with a 1,000-mile minimum. No US legacy carrier is on the list, which sounds like a problem and isn't: Turkish and Avianca reach Star Alliance, Flying Blue reaches SkyTeam, and British Airways, Qatar and Finnair reach Oneworld. The ratios to watch are EVA Air and Japan Airlines at 4:3, JetBlue at 5:3, and Accor at 2:1.

Partner list and ratios verified September 20, 2026 against The Points Guy's partner tracker and Capital One's published transfer terms. Minimum transfer is generally 1,000 miles. All transfers are one-way and irreversible — confirm the award is available before you move anything.

The Capital One 1/6 rule and other limits

Capital One will generally approve you for one new card every six months, across personal and business products combined. It also applies a 48-month restriction on repeat welcome bonuses, and the Venture family is tiered — holding a Venture X can block a bonus on the Venture or VentureOne. Capital One is also notably sensitive to how many recent accounts you have opened anywhere.

Because approvals come so slowly, Capital One rewards deliberate planning rather than opportunism. Pick the card you actually want and apply for that one — you won't get another chance for half a year.

  • The 1/6 clock runs from your last Capital One approval, not your last application. A denial doesn't reset it in your favour.
  • Capital One typically pulls all three credit bureaus on an application, which is unusual and worth knowing before you apply.
  • Business cards count toward the same 1/6 pacing as personal cards, so you can't work around it the way you can with Chase.
  • The Venture family's tiered bonus rules mean the order you take these cards in matters. Taking the Venture X first is generally the better sequence.

The Capital One sweet spots worth booking

Two partners carry most of the program's upside: Turkish Miles&Smiles and Avianca LifeMiles. Both are Star Alliance programs with their own award charts, both are reachable at 1:1, and both regularly price the same United-operated seat far below what United itself charges.

1. Turkish Miles&Smiles — low prices on Star Alliance

Turkish publishes an award chart rather than pricing dynamically, and the numbers on it are low enough that United-operated domestic and transatlantic flights can cost a fraction of what MileagePlus asks. The program's customer service is famously difficult and some bookings require a phone call, which is exactly why the awards stay available to people willing to do the work.

2. Avianca LifeMiles — Star Alliance with no fuel surcharges

The same strength it has with Amex, available here at 1:1. On a transatlantic business-class ticket, avoiding carrier-imposed surcharges can be worth several hundred dollars in cash on top of the miles saved.

3. Qatar Privilege Club — Qsuite without a US program

Qatar's business-class product is widely regarded as the best in the sky, and Privilege Club is the direct route to it. This is one of the clearest cases where Capital One reaches something Chase simply cannot.

4. Flying Blue Promo Rewards — the flexible-dates discount

Rotating monthly discounts of 25–50% on selected routes. If you can move your dates, this is the least effortful outsized redemption in the program.

5. Wyndham for vacation rentals — the one hotel partner worth a look

Wyndham's fixed-tier award pricing extends to vacation rentals, which occasionally produces a genuinely good number on a whole house for a family. It is situational, and it is the only hotel partner here I'd bother checking.

Four expensive mistakes with Capital One miles

  • Erasing a travel purchase when a transfer would have doubled it. The 1-cent eraser is a floor, not a plan. Check the partner price first — it takes two minutes.
  • Burning your one approval every six months on the wrong card. With a 1/6 rule, an impulse application is genuinely expensive.
  • Assuming no Delta or United partnership means no access. Turkish, Avianca and Flying Blue reach those planes. The seat is the same.
  • Closing your last miles-earning card. Keep the no-fee VentureOne and the balance survives.

Common questions about Capital One miles

Do Capital One miles expire?

No, not while your account is open and in good standing. If you close the card, you generally forfeit any miles still in the account — so transfer them out or move them to another Capital One card that earns miles before you cancel.

Can I transfer Capital One cash back into miles?

Yes, if you also hold a miles-earning card such as the Venture, Venture X or VentureOne. Cash back earned on cards like the Savor or Quicksilver can be converted into transferable miles in the same account, which is how a lot of people quietly build a bigger balance than they realize.

What is the Capital One 1/6 rule?

Capital One will generally approve you for only one new card every six months, across both personal and business products. It is the tightest application pacing of the four big issuers, so a Capital One card is something you plan for rather than add on impulse.

Which Capital One cards can transfer miles to partners?

The Venture, Venture X, VentureOne, Venture Business and Venture X Business. Capital One's cash-back cards cannot transfer on their own, but their rewards can be converted to miles if you hold one of the transfer-capable cards in the same account.

Is the Venture X worth its annual fee?

For most people who travel a few times a year, yes — the annual travel credit and the anniversary miles bonus together offset most of the fee before you count lounge access, and the card earns 2x on absolutely everything. It is the easiest premium card in the market to break even on, which is a genuinely unusual thing to be able to say.

Why doesn't Capital One partner with Delta, United or American?

It simply doesn't have those relationships — no US legacy carrier is on the list. In practice this matters less than it sounds, because you can reach all three alliances through partners: Turkish and Avianca for Star Alliance (United), Flying Blue for SkyTeam (Delta), and British Airways, Qatar or Finnair for Oneworld (American).
