The program I start almost every client on — what the points are really worth, which cards can actually transfer them, all 14 partners, and the rules that decide your application order.
Reviewed September 20, 2026 · written by Justin RasmussenChase changed the portal math in late 2025. The old flat boosts (1.25¢ per point on Sapphire Preferred, 1.5¢ on Sapphire Reserve) were retired and replaced with Points Boost: a 1¢ baseline on everything, with selected flights and hotels priced at a better rate — up to 2¢ per point on Sapphire Reserve.
The practical effect is that the portal is no longer a reliable floor. It's an offer-by-offer proposition now, which makes transfer partners more important than they were, not less.
| How you redeemSAME 60,000 POINTS | Typical valuePER POINT | What that's worth |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer to a partner, good award Hyatt, Aeroplan, Flying Blue | 1.8¢ – 2.5¢+ | $1,080 – $1,500+ |
| Chase Travel, with a Points Boost offer select flights and hotels | up to 2.0¢ | up to $1,200 |
| Chase Travel, standard booking | 1.0¢ | $600 |
| Cash back / statement credit | 1.0¢ | $600 |
| Gift cards or Amazon checkout | 0.8¢ – 1.0¢ | $480 – $600 |
Ranges reflect typical outcomes I see booking for clients, not guarantees — partner award pricing is dynamic on several programs. Portal figures reflect the Points Boost structure in effect as of September 2026. Reviewed September 20, 2026.
For contractors and small business owners, the Ink family is usually where the real volume comes from. Business spend — materials, fuel, subs, insurance, advertising — is bigger than household spend and earns at higher rates.
| Card | Annual fee | What it earns | Transfers? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ink Business Preferred business | $95 | 3x on travel, shipping, internet/cable/phone and advertising, up to a combined annual cap; cell phone protection | Yes |
| Sapphire Preferred personal | $95 | 5x travel through Chase Travel, 3x dining, online groceries and streaming, 2x other travel, plus a 10% anniversary points bonus | Yes |
| Sapphire Reserve personal | $795 | 8x Chase Travel, 4x flights and hotels booked direct, 3x dining — and it keeps the 1:1 Hyatt ratio after October 1 | Yes |
| Ink Business Cash business | None | 5x at office supply stores and on internet, cable and phone service; 2x at gas stations and restaurants (caps apply) | Needs a pairing |
| Ink Business Unlimited business | None | 1.5x on every purchase, no categories to track | Needs a pairing |
| Freedom Unlimited personal | None | 1.5x on everything, 3x dining and drugstores, 5x travel through Chase Travel | Needs a pairing |
"Needs a pairing" means the card earns Ultimate Rewards points but can't send them to an airline on its own — combine them into a Sapphire or Ink Preferred account first, which is free and instant. Earning rates and caps change; confirm current terms before applying. Reviewed September 20, 2026.
This guide is about how the program works, not which card to apply for. Welcome offers change constantly, so they live in one place and one place only — kept current, with an honest note on each link about whether I earn anything from it.
This is the mistake I fix most often. Someone earns 200,000 points on an Ink Cash over two years, goes to book a flight, and discovers their only option is a 1¢ cash-out. The fix takes about four minutes: open the "Combine points" tool in Chase's rewards center, move the balance into the Sapphire or Ink Preferred account, then transfer to the partner.
Points can also be combined with a spouse or domestic partner's Ultimate Rewards account at no cost, which matters more than most people realize when you're trying to reach one big award.
Chase is cutting the World of Hyatt transfer ratio from 1:1 to 4:3 for Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred cardholders — 1,000 Chase points will become 750 Hyatt points. Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Reserve for Business keep 1:1. What to do before the deadline →

Partner list and ratios verified September 20, 2026 against Chase's published transfer terms and independent reporting from Frequent Miler and Upgraded Points. Transfers are one-way and cannot be reversed — never move points until the award you want is confirmed available.
Hyatt still prices awards by category rather than by cash rate, which means a $600 night at a Category 4 resort can cost 15,000 points. That's 4¢ per point, on a night you'd never have paid cash for. This is the redemption I point nearly every new client toward first — and, as of October 1, the reason the Sapphire Reserve's math changed for heavy Hyatt users.
Aeroplan prices partner awards by distance band, doesn't pass along fuel surcharges on most partners, and lets you add a stopover on a one-way for a modest points add-on. For a family routing through a hub, that stopover rule can turn one trip into two destinations.
Flying Blue publishes a rotating set of discounted routes each month, typically 25–50% off the standard award price. If your dates are flexible and your destination isn't fixed, this is the single easiest way to get outsized value out of Chase points to Europe.
Iberia's award chart has a distinct off-peak season with materially lower pricing to Madrid, and it's a Oneworld program most people never think to check. Worth a look before you assume Europe is expensive.
Southwest awards are fixed-value, so you won't see 4¢ per point — but for families flying domestically, two free checked bags per person and a Companion Pass that flies a second traveler for taxes alone often beats a "better" redemption on paper. More on the family math →
This is why application order matters more with Chase than with any other bank. The practical rule of thumb I give clients: get your Chase cards first. If you open two Amex cards and a store card this year and then decide you want the Ink Business Preferred, you may have locked yourself out for two years without realizing it.
A few things that trip people up:
No — not while your account is open and in good standing. But if you close the card the points live on, you generally forfeit any balance still sitting there. Before you close a card, move the points to another Ultimate Rewards account or transfer them out to a partner.
You can combine points with a spouse or domestic partner who has their own Ultimate Rewards account, at no cost. You can also transfer points to an airline or hotel account held by an authorized user on your card. You cannot sell points or move them to an unrelated person's account — that violates the program terms and can get accounts shut down.
It depends entirely on whether you'll use the credits, and on how much you transfer to Hyatt. The card carries a large stack of annual credits that more than covers the fee on paper — but only if they fit how you actually travel and spend. For a family that stays at Hyatt properties several times a year, the 1:1 Hyatt ratio it retains after October 1, 2026 is now a real, quantifiable reason to hold it over the Preferred. For everyone else, the $95 Sapphire Preferred does the same transferring job for $700 less.
Mechanically they're the same currency. A "cash back" Chase card like the Ink Cash earns Ultimate Rewards points that default to being worth 1¢ as cash. The moment you combine them into an account with a Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, or Ink Business Preferred, those same points become transferable — and potentially worth double.
Most airline partners are near-instant. Air France-KLM Flying Blue takes about an hour, Singapore KrisFlyer one to two days, IHG about a day, Marriott about two days, and Wyndham can take up to a week. Never count on a slow partner for an award you need to lock in today.
For most people: Chase first. The 5/24 rule is the only application restriction that can lock you out of an entire issuer's lineup for two full years, and it counts cards from every bank. Amex's own restrictions are about which specific bonuses you can earn, not whether you can be approved at all. Get the Chase cards you want while you're under 5/24, then work on the others.
