Citi ThankYou points:
everything you need to know

The most underrated of the four — and the only credit card currency that reaches American Airlines AAdvantage. What the points are worth, which cards transfer at full ratio, and the rules that decide whether you get approved.

What are Citi ThankYou points worth?

Citi ThankYou points are worth roughly 1.6 to 2 cents each transferred to an airline partner from a premium Citi card, and about 1 cent redeemed for travel or cash. The critical detail — and the one that trips people up constantly — is that the transfer ratio depends on which Citi card you hold. From a Strata Premier or Strata Elite, most airline partners are 1:1. From a Double Cash or Custom Cash on its own, the same transfer can cost you 30% more points.

Citi is the most underrated of the four big programs and the one I recommend third. Its case rests on one thing the others can't match: American Airlines AAdvantage is a transfer partner. If you fly American, or you want access to Oneworld awards priced on AAdvantage's chart, this is the only credit card currency that gets you there.

Which Citi cards earn ThankYou points?

The Strata Premier is the card that makes this program work for most people. It earns elevated rewards across an unusually broad set of everyday categories and transfers at full ratio. The no-fee cards — Double Cash and Custom Cash — are excellent earners, but they need a premium card in the same account to transfer well.

What are the Citi transfer partners?

Citi has 20 transfer partners — 15 airlines and 5 hotel programs — and American Airlines AAdvantage is the one that matters most. No other major transferable currency reaches AAdvantage. The rest of the list is strong on Star Alliance and Oneworld access, with Turkish, Avianca, Qatar and Virgin Atlantic all available at 1:1 from a premium card.

Partner list verified September 20, 2026 against Upgraded Points' Citi partner tracker. Ratios shown are for premium cards — Strata Premier, Strata Elite or legacy Prestige. Minimum transfer is 1,000 points. Citi discontinued point sharing between accounts in May 2026. All transfers are one-way and irreversible.

Why your transfer ratio depends on your card

Citi is the only one of the four programs where the same 10,000 points buy different amounts depending on which card is in your wallet. Hold a Strata Premier or Strata Elite and most airline transfers are 1:1. Hold only a Double Cash or Custom Cash and those same transfers run at a reduced rate — commonly around 1:0.7, meaning you need roughly 30% more points for the same award.

This is the single most important structural fact about Citi, and it's the one most people discover too late. The fix is the same one that applies at Chase: hold one premium card in the account, and let the no-fee cards do the earning.

A Double Cash earning an effective 2x on everything, paired with a Strata Premier that unlocks 1:1 transfers, is a genuinely strong and inexpensive setup. A Double Cash alone is a cash-back card with extra steps.

The Citi 8/65 rule

Citi will generally approve at most one card every eight days and two cards every 65 days, counting personal and business applications together. Citi also applies a 48-month restriction on repeat welcome bonuses for the same card, and is unusually strict about recent hard inquiries — several recent pulls will often produce a denial on a premium card regardless of your score.
  • The 8/65 window is about pacing, not lifetime limits. Unlike Amex, a bonus you take now becomes available again after four years.
  • Citi counts hard inquiries from every bank, not just its own. If you have been applying elsewhere, wait before you try for a Strata card.
  • Citi is generally the most forgiving of the four on repeat bonuses and the least forgiving on inquiry history — which is the opposite of how most people assume it works.

The Citi sweet spots worth booking

The AAdvantage partnership is the headline, and Turkish and Avianca do the heavy lifting on Star Alliance. Citi's list is narrower than Amex's but hits several of the same high-value programs at 1:1.

1. American Airlines AAdvantage — the partnership nobody else has

Being able to top off an AAdvantage balance with credit card points is genuinely unique among the major currencies. If you're a few thousand miles short of an award, or you want Oneworld partner awards priced on AAdvantage's chart, Citi is the only door.

2. Turkish Miles&Smiles — low-priced Star Alliance awards

The same published award chart that makes Turkish valuable with Capital One miles, reachable here at 1:1 from a premium card. Expect to work for the booking; expect the price to be worth it.

3. Avianca LifeMiles — no fuel surcharges

Fast transfers, no carrier-imposed surcharges, and Star Alliance access. A reliable default when you want a business-class seat without a four-figure cash component.

4. Qatar Privilege Club — Qsuite

Direct access to what is widely considered the best business-class product flying. Worth building toward if a long-haul trip is on your horizon.

5. Flying Blue Promo Rewards — flexible dates, discounted awards

Rotating monthly discounts of 25–50%. The easiest win in the program if you can move your dates.

Common questions about Citi ThankYou points

Do Citi ThankYou points expire?

Points generally remain available while your account is open and in good standing. Citi has historically applied expiration windows after an account closes, so move points out or into another ThankYou-earning account before you cancel a card.

Why do my points transfer at a worse ratio than someone else's?

Because transfer ratios depend on which Citi card you hold. Premium cards such as the Strata Premier and Strata Elite transfer to most airline partners at 1:1. Cards like the Double Cash and Custom Cash transfer at reduced ratios — often around 1:0.7 — unless you also hold a premium card in the same ThankYou account.

What is the Citi 8/65 rule?

Citi will generally approve you for at most one card every eight days and two cards every 65 days, counting personal and business applications together. Citi is also unusually sensitive to recent hard inquiries, and premium cards in particular are frequently denied to applicants with several recent pulls.

Can I transfer Citi points to American Airlines?

Yes — American Airlines AAdvantage is a Citi transfer partner, and it is the main reason to pay attention to this program. No other major transferable currency offers a route into AAdvantage, which makes Citi the only practical way to top off an AAdvantage balance with credit card points.

Is the Citi Strata Premier worth its annual fee?

For most people, yes, if you actually use the categories. It earns elevated rewards on a genuinely broad set of everyday spending — air travel, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations — which is a wider net than most cards at that fee level cast, and it transfers at full ratio.

Is Citi better than Chase or Amex?

Not usually better — different. Citi is the program most people should hold third rather than first. Its case is specific: the AAdvantage partnership, a strong set of everyday earning categories, and access to Turkish and Avianca. If those things don't matter to you, Chase or Amex will serve you better.
