How to fly to your cruise port with points
and not miss the ship

The smartest way to spend points on a cruise vacation is not the cruise. It is getting there. Here is how to pick a port, find the seats, and arrive early enough that a delay does not cancel your trip.

Reviewed September 2026 · Justin Rasmussen
Pay cash for the cruise, then use points for the flights and arrive at least a day before the ship sails. Transferable points are typically worth about twice as much on an award flight as they are against a cruise fare, and the ship will not wait for you if a flight is late. A day of buffer and a hotel night paid with points turns the riskiest part of a cruise into the cheapest.

Why spend points on the flights instead of the cruise?

Cashing points against a cruise fare returns roughly 0.5 to 1.5 cents each, while award flights are typically valued around 2 cents. For a family, airfare to the port is often the second-biggest cash cost of the trip. I walk through the numbers on a $6,000 fare in Should you use points to pay for a cruise?. This page covers the other half: getting there.

Which cruise ports are easiest to fly to?

The busiest ports sit next to big airports with many daily flights, and more flights generally means more chances to find award seats. These are the ten busiest US homeports by 2024 passengers.

How do you find award flights to a cruise port?

The same way you would find them for any family trip, with a few port-specific habits.

  • Search several airports. Florida has three major cruise gateways within a couple of hours of each other. If Miami is full, Fort Lauderdale or Orlando might not be.
  • Check Southwest first for Florida, Texas and the Gulf. Where it serves your airport, every seat is bookable at a fixed points price, so "is there room for five" is answered on the booking page. My guide to booking award flights for five covers why that matters for families.
  • Book early. Cruise dates are set a year or more ahead, so you can search award space when the schedule opens instead of when you finally pay off the cruise.
  • Use the fewest connections you can. Every connection is another chance to miss the ship, and cruise ports punish delays more than almost any other destination.

When should you arrive before the cruise?

At least one full day before departure. The Points Guy's advice is blunt: "always travel to your departure port at least a day before your cruise, even if you're traveling by car." A hotel night in port is cheap insurance, and it is the second thing to buy with points: Hyatt, Marriott and Hilton points all work for a night near most major ports. Chase points transfer to Hyatt and Marriott, and Amex points transfer to Marriott and Hilton, though ratios change, so check before you move anything.

What happens if your flight is delayed and you miss the ship?

The cruise line generally keeps sailing. According to The Points Guy (May 12, 2025), ships sail on schedule even if a passenger on a cruise-line-booked flight is delayed, you usually cannot board at a later port because of US maritime law, and cruise lines generally do not offer refunds or future cruise credits for a missed sailing. Some lines may help you reach another port when a cruise-line flight was the cause, but not always.

Insurance helps less than people expect. The same article notes that some plans cover missed connections only for weather delays, the delay minimum can range from 3 to 12 hours, maximums can be as low as $250, and traffic delays typically do not count. Read the exclusions before you rely on a policy, and treat arriving a day early as your real protection.

What does this look like as a plan?

  1. Book the cruise, paying with cash or a card you earn on without cashing points out.
  2. Choose the airport with the most award options near the port, and search 11 months out where you can.
  3. Transfer points to the airline or book Southwest, then fly in the day before.
  4. Pay for the hotel night in port with hotel points.
  5. Check your travel insurance's missed-connection terms before you leave.

If you would rather hand off both halves, the cruise is booked free through me and the flights are an award search I run for a flat $297.

Common questions

Do cruise lines wait for passengers whose flights are delayed?

Generally no. The Points Guy reports that ships sail on schedule even when a passenger is delayed, including passengers whose flights were booked through the cruise line. Cruise lines usually offer no refund or credit for a missed sailing, which is why arriving at least a day early matters.

Should I fly in the day before my cruise?

Yes, for almost everyone. Flying in at least a day early, even if you are driving, is standard advice because it gives you a buffer against delays and cancellations. You can often cover the hotel night with points too.

Is it cheaper to use points or cash for flights to a cruise port?

It depends on the fare, but points are usually best used on flights, not the cruise. Transferable points are typically valued around 2 cents each on award flights, roughly double what a cruise portal returns. Compare the cash fare against the points price before you transfer anything.

Will travel insurance cover a missed cruise if my flight is late?

Sometimes, but read the policy. The Points Guy notes some plans cover missed connections only for weather delays, delay minimums range from 3 to 12 hours, coverage limits can be as low as $250, and traffic delays are typically not covered.

Which cruise ports are easiest to fly to?

The busiest ports have the most flight options, which gives you more chances to find award seats. In 2024 those were PortMiami, Port Canaveral, Port Everglades and Galveston, followed by Seattle, San Juan, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Tampa and Cape Liberty in New Jersey.
